Humboldt State University Marine Lab

The Humboldt State University Marine Lab was established in 1965 to provide a center for marine science teaching and research for the students and faculty of the College of Natural Resources and Sciences. Located on a bluff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean in the beautiful city of Trinidad, the HSU Marine Lab provides ready access to rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, and offshore kelp beds. This dramatic coastline of California remains one of the most pristine natural areas of the state. The lab is well equipped to support teaching and research projects on marine life and ocean environments by providing classrooms, wet labs with free-flowing seawater, small boats, a scientific diving program, and the campus flagship vessel, the 90 ft. R/V Coral Sea.

Language Teaching & Learning: English for marine science

Language and scientific professors throughout the United States created a prototype English language course for Marine Science. In August 2000, a collection of unique course materials for college students was completed and put into use.

English language for Maritime

Within an industry with a significant global presence, it is imperative to establish a shared language that all individuals aboard a vessel can comprehend and use for communication. Maritime English, or Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP), is the common language spoken at sea. It is of utmost importance for several reasons, including the safety of the crew, the effectiveness of everyday operations, and the overall soundness of the ship.
